Nigerian diaspora leaders honoured at CBI African Icons Merit Award

Three prominent figures of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation (NIDO) Indiana Chapter were among those recognised at the maiden edition of the CBI African Icons Merit Award, held at the Global Village Welcome Center in Indianapolis on 6 September.

The event, organised by the CBI Community Network, brought together African leaders and professionals across Indiana in a night dedicated to celebrating excellence, cultural pride and community service. A total of 17 awards were presented, with NIDO Indiana leaders receiving three of the honours.

Chief Emmanuel Nsonwu, Chief Henry Onochie and Bishop Dr Sunday Robert-Eze were recognised for their contributions to the Nigerian community and wider African diaspora in the United States.

Chief Onochie, an industrialist and founder of the international architectural firm HCO, was acknowledged for his leadership in NIDO Indiana and his commitment to cultural preservation through the Ozo Society of Onitsha.

recognised for guiding families and small businesses towards financial stability and for his wider contributions as a community leader and former NIDO Indiana executive.

Under the leadership of such figures, NIDO Indiana has introduced initiatives including passport intervention schemes, National Identification Number registration and Bank Verification Number services—programmes that have eased access to essential government documentation for Nigerians abroad.

Organisers said the awards were designed to honour Africans in the diaspora who have made measurable contributions to society. Convener Sunday Lanre Omotoso said the recognition was based on merit, reflecting the impact of the recipients’ work in their communities.
